Mumbai: Of 48,000 fire mishaps in 10 years, 1,568 were in high-rises, states RTI report

Over the 10 years from 2008 to July 2018, the city witnessed 48,434 fire incidents, which claimed 609 lives including 29 children. Out of the total incidents, 1,568 were reported in highrises. Meanwhile, 3,841 fire incidents were reported in 2020 and 100 people died in them. Property worth Rs 89 crore was damaged in these incidents. Of the 48,434 fire incidents from 2008 to 2018, 1,568 happened in skyscrapers, 8,737 in residential buildings, 3,833 in commercial buildings and 3,151 in slums. The highest number of 32,516 incidents was due to short circuits. A total of 1,116 fires broke out due to gas cylinder leaks and 11,889 fire incidents occurred due to other reasons. Activist Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh obtained the information under RTI.

Fire incidents from 2008 to 2018

. Zone 1 - South Mumbai - 9,887 fires broke out in 325 skyscrapers, 1,546 residential buildings, 987 commercial buildings and 75 huts.
. Zone 2 - South Central Mumbai - 10,719 fires broke out in 129 skyscrapers, 1,824 residential buildings, 664 commercial buildings and 934 slums.
. Zone 3 - Bandra to Andheri, Jogeshwari East - 8,717 fires were reported in 496 skyscrapers, 1,382 residential buildings, 939 commercial buildings and 443 huts.
. Zone 4 - Andheri West to Dahisar - 8,328 fires were reported in 289 skyscrapers, 1,835 residential buildings, 661 commercial buildings and 403 huts.
. Zone 5 - Kurla, Chembur to Mankhurd - 5,683 fires were reported in 50 skyscrapers, 1,547 residential buildings, 208 commercial buildings and 1,273 huts.
. Zone 6 - Ghatkopar to Mulund - 5,107 fires were reported in 279 skyscrapers, 603
residential buildings, 374 commercial buildings and 23 huts.
