The collector and district election officer for Mumbai city, Rajiv Nivtekar, has warned that people whose photos are not available in the voter list won't be eligible to vote in upcoming elections. Nivtekar has started a special drive after it was found that there are no photos for 18,000 people on the voter list.
The deadline for submitting the photos at nearby election offices is July 8. Unless they update their photos, people will be removed from the voting list and thus ineligible to vote.
The instructions have been issued to residents of Colaba to Bandra and Kurla. Nivtekar urged people to check their details in the voting list immediately.
Having photos of registered voters is important to prevent fake votes. The authorities are checking the database to find out exactly how many people are without photos in the voter list. Central government officers are then visiting residences of people without photos.

Often, despite submitting their photos to the election offices, people's photos are not updated in the voter list. Officials said that voters can check their details at the election department offices or check online on www.electionmumbaicity.org.in.
Mumbai City Zilla Election Department has said that it will be assumed that people without photos have moved away. Their name will be removed from the list.
