Potholes being fixed on the Mumbai-Nashik highway near Igatpuri
Days after this newspaper highlighted the plight of motorists suffering due to too many potholes on the Mumbai-Nashik highway, authorities have begun levelling many stretches of the road with paver blocks.
mid-day on July 21 had reported that several parts of the busy carriageway were riddled with potholes, particularly after Ghoti toll plaza and near Igatpuri. Since areas between Kalyan and Igatpuri receive heavy rainfall and often turn foggy during the monsoon reducing visibility, bad roads become dangerous for motorists and two-wheeler riders. Spurred by the report, paver blocks are being fixed at many places on the road, said users.
Rajesh Sanap, a daily commuter, said the 200-300 metre stretch after Ghoti toll plaza and near Igatpuri, towards Mumbai, had over 500 potholes and used to cause huge traffic jams. "It's good that authorities have woken up from their slumber and started fixing the road. This is not a permanent solution but it will prevent congestion and save time and fuel for the time being," said Sanap.

The commuter added, "We hope that post-monsoon the entire Mumbai-Nashik highway is properly repaired so that daily commuters and motorists won't have to face inconvenience."
Like Sanap, other users of the road are not too convinced about the use of paver blocks since heavy vehicles run on the highway. They fear the arrangement might work for just a few days considering the high volume of traffic on the road.
