London Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli has proposed to name an artificial intelligence (AI) centre in the UK capital after Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, an official said on Friday.

Mainelli met Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at Varsha bungalow, the latter's official residence, on Thursday, a statement issued by the chief minister's office (CMO) said.

During the meeting, the London Lord Mayor Michael Mainelli discussed naming an artificial intelligence (AI) centre in the UK Capital city London after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, it said.

Welcoming the move, the chief minister proposed that a statue of the Maratha king be installed in the UK capital, the statement said.

The duo held discussions on issues, including artificial intelligence, clean air, the environment and information and technology.

Who is Shivaji Maharaj?

Shivaji Maharaj was a prominent historical figure in India, particularly remembered for his role in establishing the Maratha Empire in the 17th century. He was born on February 19, 1630, in the hill fort of Shivneri, near the city of Junnar in present-day Maharashtra.

Shivaji's father, Shahaji Bhonsle, was a Maratha general who served the Deccan Sultanates, and his mother, Jijabai, was a devout Hindu with a strong influence on his upbringing.

He started his career by establishing a small military force and gradually expanded his territory by capturing forts and regions. Shivaji implemented innovative military tactics, including guerrilla warfare and strategic alliances, to counter the more powerful forces.

In 1674, Shivaji was crowned as Chhatrapati (emperor) of the Maratha Empire, marking the formal establishment of his kingdom. He implemented various administrative reforms, including the establishment of a council of ministers and a revenue system.

His naval expansion and reforms were significant, establishing Maratha dominance along the western coast of India and challenging the Portuguese and British naval powers in the region.

Shivaji's legacy remains profound in Indian history, revered as a warrior-king who allegedly fought more powerful forces. He is remembered for his military acumen, administrative skills, and his commitment to the welfare of his people. (With inputs from agencies)
