Powai lake overflowed on June 12 this year
The early rain brought good news to Mumbai, as the lakes which provide water to the city have more stock than last year at this time. The seven lakes have a combined stock of 2.22 lakh million litres water. There was a stock of 1.48 lakh million litres on the same day, last year. The total capacity of the lakes is 14.5 lakh million litres.
The city gets water from seven lakes - Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Tulsi and Vihar. Powai lake which provides water for industrial use overflowed on June 12, almost 24 days prior to the date last year. While water levels in other lakes are still on the low side, the total water stock is more than what it was in the last two years around the same time of the year. In 2020, the water stock was 1.48 lakh million litres and in 2019, when the monsoon arrived late the water stock dipped to 77,763 million litres. The city receives 3,800 million litres of water every day.
The current stock is around 15 per cent of the lakes' capacity. If all the lakes fill up to their capacity by the end of September, then the city gets uninterrupted water supply till the next monsoon.
