Love for kites proved fatal for a 10-year-old boy on Makar Sankranti after he fell into a pit full of buffalo dung in Kandivli West. Durveh Jadhav was the only child of his parents and lived in Flat No. 402 of Prasad Society (SRA) on Link Road, said the police. On Thursday afternoon, the boy spotted from his window a kite on the premises of a tabela or stable near his home and decided to get it.

The child entered the stable and found the kite on a pile of buffalo dung. As he leaned forward to pick it, he lost his balance and slipped into the swamp. Hearing his screams, a labourer from an adjacent construction site, Ruparel project, rushed to help. While he could manage to grab his hand, the boy slipped and sunk deep into the bovine excreta.

The police later pulled Jadhav from the pit and took him to Shatabdi Hospital but he was declared brought dead. The police said the stable has metal sheet fencing, but since the door was latched from outside without any lock, the child could easily open it. A case of accidental death has registered.
