A bar owner and two others were arrested by the Colaba police for slapping and abusing a policeman on Thursday. They were produced in court and sent to police custody till Saturday.
Roadside brawl
On Thursday, constables Koli and Zende attached to the Colaba police station were on duty to carry out action against the homeless and encroachers. Both were in plain clothes. At 3 pm, they went to Baghdadi Galli near Gokul bar and Zende asked the owner of a food stall there, Bhaskar Joshi (36), for a 7Up. Joshi didn't have 7Up and, hence, opened a Sprite. The constables, however, kept demanding for 7Up, Joshi said he didn't have it and had already opened a bottle. An argument broke out and Joshi started abusing the constables. Soon after, owners of Gokul bar Dinesh Pujari (39) and Satish Pujari (41) came and started abusing the two as well. Even after Zende and Koli said they were policemen and explained the reason for the argument, Dinesh paid no heed and slapped Koli.
The constables then realised that the Pujaris were angry because of the action being taken on encroachments. Koli and Zende went to St. George's hospital for medical examination and then came to the police station and filed a complaint.
In custody
The Pujaris and Joshi have been booked under sections 353 (assault on public servant to deter him from duty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (provoke breach of peace) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
The three were produced in the magistrate court yesterday, which sent them to police custody till Saturday.
