Mumbai: Fire breaks out at Dagadi Chawl in Byculla, no injuries reported

A fire broke out at the infamous Dagadi Chawl building in central Mumbai's Byculla area on Wednesday night but no one was injured in the incident, said Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

According to BMC, the fire broke out in a room on the top floor of the two-storey building on BJ Marg around 9 pm and was brought under control within an hour.

"A level 1 fire broke out at a room in a two-storey building at around 9:20 pm in BJ Marg, Dagadi Chawl in Mumbai's Byculla area," BMC said in a statement.

A civic official told the news agency PTI that four fire engines were rushed to the spot.

No one was injured as the flames were confined to only two rooms, BMC said, adding that the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

The Dagadi Chawl acquired fame in the 1990s as gangster Arun Gawli lived and operated from there. Gawli is now lodged in prison.
