Mumbai: Facelift for Aarey road after mid-day report

Taking note of a mid-day report highlighting the sorry state of an internal road in Aarey Milk Colony, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started filling potholes on the stretch.

A civic official said, "During the dry spell, asphalting work on one section of the internal road to where traffic has been diverted has been done and in the next one to two days, the other section of the road will also be asphalted. Once the monsoon is over, the asphalting work of the entire stretch will be done so that motorists don't have to face problems."

The stretch on Wednesday

After mid-day's report, ‘...Meanwhile, Aarey road feels like moon's surface' (July 30) was published, shedding light on the fact that motorists using the 440-metre stretch were forced to negotiate nearly 200 potholes, non-functioning streetlights on one section of the road have also been fixed. However, streetlights on the stretch towards New Zealand Hostel still do not work, endangering pedestrians and locals after sunset.

Traffic has been diverted to the internal road, which passes the hostel and connects to Goregaon on the Western Express Highway, because of ongoing construction on the Aarey main road. Several locals have seen riders fall off their bikes while commuting at the spot.

On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court constituted a six-member committee comprising state and BMC officials and environment experts to survey the 45-km pothole-ridden internal roads of Aarey Milk Colony and suggest a road map for their reconstruction.
