Building owners and occupants must comply with the provisions of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Saving Measures Act, or else they could face action, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated in the backdrop of spate of major fire incidents in high-rises.

The civic body has appealed to citizens to not use flammable material for interior decoration in buildings and to not alter fire protection systems and electrical structures. It further said interior architects and architects need to pay special attention to these matters.

"The owners/occupants concerned of all buildings in the city must ensure that the fire extinguishing system and equipment, as well as the fire alarm equipment, are properly functioning, especially in high-rises," said a BMC official. He added, "The BMC administration appeals to all concerned to prevent fire-related accidents. It is the responsibility of the owner/occupier to enforce the provisions of fire prevention and life-saving measures in buildings."

As mentioned in sub-section (3) of section 3 of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Saving Measures Act, 2006, fire extinguishing systems have to be in efficient condition. It is also mandatory to get a fire audit done in January and July.
