The civic body plans to develop the space below the BKC-Chunabhatti connector, near Prem Nagar at Dharavi into a play area and recreational space. Once completed, the green zone will be the largest such space in Dharavi, a sprawling slum pocket, said BMC officials. It will be spread over 87,000 square feet and will cost about Rs 1.6 crore.

The recreational area will have a 400-metre jogging track apart from a playground that will come up on an adjoining vacant plot. There will be an open gym and a kids' play area. The BMC has already floated tenders for the project and work is expected to be completed in six months.

Officials said the BMC has been developing green spaces below the flyovers for the last several years to increase the city's green cover space and to ensure that they are free of encroachment by the homeless or abandoned vehicles.

As there is a nullah adjoining the planned project, there will be a 135-metre-long retaining wall along the park. Officials said the corporation will develop a Miyawaki forest next to the wall. While there will be floodlights on the piers of the flyover for proper illumination and to keep antisocial elements at bay, the civic body will also construct a 50-seat community toilet next to the park through CSR funds.

To avoid any dispute over the land, BMC has taken an NOC from infra body MMRDA that has built the flyover, said officials. The project will be the second large green space at Dharavi after WIT Park.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar said, "We will be developing the space below the flyover into a huge playground along with a children's play area and open gym. It will be the biggest park in Dharavi. It will also ensure a vulnerable space to be free of encroachment."
