CCTV footage has led cops to suspect that the woman, believed to be 20-22 years old, whose body was found near Sarsole creek on Sunday, was killed by her parents
Investigations into the dead body of a woman being found near Sarsole creek off Palm Beach road have led the Turbhe police to suspect that she could have been the victim of an honour killing.
Some devotees heading to the temple near the creek on Sunday morning had informed the police that a dead body was lying there. When the Turbhe police reached the spot, they discovered that the body was partly burnt and the victim was a woman, believed to be between 20 and 22 years old.
According to officials investigating the case, they have recovered CCTV footage from a camera on Palm Beach road. "We have found CCTV footage which does not tell us exactly what happened but offers glimpses into the events of Saturday night.
We think her body may have been brought to the spot in a Mahindra Bolero as we can see that the SUV went to the spot where the body was found at least four times on Saturday night. The SUV was accompanied by two people on a bike," said a police officer.
"A saree-clad woman was among the SUV's occupants and we suspect that she could be the victim's mother. We very strongly believe that this could be a case of parents killing their daughter," he added.
No missing plaint
Another thing that has heightened the cops' suspicion that it could be an honour killing is that they haven't found any missing person's case that matches the deceased's description despite checking with all the police stations under the jurisdiction of the Navi Mumbai commisionerate.
"Along with Navi Mumbai, we have also checked with some police stations in Thane. If someone's daughter went missing, they would definitely file a missing person's case. One complaint matched the victim's description but that woman was found in a state in northern India on Monday," added the officer.
The girl was clothed when she was found and post-mortem reports have stated that she wasn't sexually assaulted. The police suspect her throat was slit and her body was set ablaze later so that no one could ascertain her identity.
