Mumbai Crime: Rs 3.8 lakh stolen from Hinduja college

Police say the accused got into the accounts department of the college through some slums next to the building, and also stole a few Ganesh idols made of metal


The VP Road police have registered a theft, wherein Rs 3.8 lakh and few Ganesh idols were stolen from the accounts department of south Mumbai-based KPB Hinduja College. The complaint was registered recently by Shreeprasad Pandurang Paunche (48), who is employed with the department.

An officer from VP Road police station said, "The offices of the principal and the accounts department are in a separate building, next to which is a part of a slum. The accused had taken the help of the rooftops there to get into the room. The windows were half open." He added, "The accused was probably aware of where all the keys were kept inside the room, as nothing was broken into"

The accused fled with Rs 3.8 lakh from the department along with a few Ganesh idols made of metal. The cops have recovered CCTV footage in which the accused is seen clearly. "We have been showing the footage to all our informers and locals in the slum from where the accused had got into the room," the officer said.

Senior Inspector Sanjay Kamble from VP Road police station claimed that their investigations are on track and they will nab the accused soon. The case has been registered under sections 454 (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment), 457 (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) and 380 (theft in dwelling house, etc) of the Indian Penal Code. Several teams have been formed to trace the accused.
