A Badlapur-based construction worker has been arrested for allegedly raping his granddaughter. The accused, Shankar Jadhav, 55, has been kept in police custody till July 7, while the survivor, 18, has been sent to an observation centre for medical tests and counselling.
Lonesome adolescence
An officer at Badlapur East police station said Jadhav's divorcee daughter had remarried a few years ago and shifted to Rajasthan with her second husband, who refused to accept the girl. "She was sent to live with her grandfather and maternal uncle and aunt in Badlapur. In her statement, she said she had started working at the construction site with her grandfather, but he kept trying to assault her sexually, so she gave up the job. On July 1, she was at home and her aunt and uncle were at work when Jadhav allegedly raped her," he added.
Runaway survivor
The girl ran away and took a train to Bandra, in an effort to reach Rajasthan. At the Bandra Terminus, some Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel approached her and she narrated her ordeal to them.
"The officers registered a case at the Bandra GRP station on Monday and, later, transferred the case to us. We have booked Jadhav for rape," said Dilip Rajbhoj, senior inspector.
