The couple lived at Bharat Mills Co-operative Society
A man and his wife were found dead in their rented apartment in Worli on Wednesday. The police found a note that said the couple ended their lives as they were frustrated after contracting Covid-19.
The police said the deceased people - Ajay Kumar, 34, and Sujja S, 30 - hailed from Kerala. While Sujja worked in a private bank at Fort, Ajay was employed with a company in Navi Mumbai. The couple got married 10 months ago and had taken a flat for rent at Bharat Mills Co-operative Society.
The alleged suicide was uncovered after Sujja's mother from Kerala tried to reach her around noon on Wednesday. After her calls remained unanswered, she asked a friend of Sujja who lives in the same building to check on her.
The friend knocked on the couple's door but nobody opened it. Neighbours managed to enter the house around 7 pm. They found Ajay's body in the kitchen, while Sujja was lying in the passage between the bathroom and hall. The police took them to Nair hospital where doctors declared the two brought dead.
A police officer said the deaths look like a case of suicide as there were no signs of struggle on the bodies. They said Sujja had been to her mother's place after she was infected with the virus and returned to Mumbai in a few days.
The couple had got on to their daily routine but apparently began to worry too much when they started showing signs of a re-infection. A purported suicide note recovered from the house says they were ending their lives due to Covid.
Senior Inspector Anil Koli of Worli police station said, "The post-mortem has been done today. The cause of death will be clear after the report comes." Koli added, "From the family members of the couple, we want to know why they were upset. Did these two ever share their troubles with the family?"
The couple's families were expected to be in the city on Thursday night.
