The Arnala police in Virar said they have arrested the son of a Mumbai police officer for allegedly morphing photos of young women and a minor girl and uploading them on social media.
The police filed an FIR August 22 based on the complaint of a 19-year-old woman. The complainant along with eight other women and a 15-year-old girl had been targeted by the accused, identified as Jeet Nijai, according to the FIR. Police said Jeet, 23, allegedly used artificial intelligence (AI) to morph the photos of young women, and then posted them on fake profiles he created on Instagram and Snapchat.
Cops said the complainant had confronted Jeet after seeing her morphed photos, but his brother Yash Nijai had verbally abused her.
"Based on the FIR we had immediately arrested Jeet and found a lot of morphed photos on his electronic device. The court has remanded him in police custody for six days, as we want to know the motive," a police officer said.
"Jeet never demanded money or blackmailed any of the victims," the cop said, adding, "He has been booked under Sections 354C (voyeurism), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC, and various sections of the IT Act."
"The accused is the son of a cop posted in Mumbai. He had been previously booked under similar offenses, but since he was a minor at the time, the juvenile court released him on a cash bond of R10,000," the officer said.
