Civic chief Iqbal Singh Chahal confirmed during the BMC budget presentation on Friday that the first phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road will open on February 19, offering signal-free connectivity between Worli and Nariman Point. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Phase-1 while the full project will be completed by May 15," Chahal said.

PM Modi will also partake in the groundbreaking ceremony of the Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) tunnel work. According to Chahal, the work will start on February 19 and the project will be completed by October 2028. "Meanwhile, the Versova-Dahisar connector and Dahisar-Mira Road connector will be completed by 2029," he added.

In his budget speech, Chahal said that the BMC has decided to develop these projects and the sewage treatment plant as mega projects with an aim to make them self-sustainable. "The BMC has decided to generate revenue to develop these projects and also to maintain them. The civic body intends to carry out a financial study by appointing a consultant to explore the possibility of self-sustainability of these projects," the civic administrator said.

The civic body has planned to develop the GMLR in three phases. While the rail overbridge (ROB) at Nahur was supposed to be completed by now, Chahal said in his budget speech that the work is 80 per cent complete and will be done by May 2024. The other work is expected to be completed by May 2025, in various phases, while the tunnel between Film City (Goregoan) to Nahur is expected to be ready in October 2028. The civic body has made a provision of R2,900 crore for GMLR in the budget.

Meanwhile, the process of issuing a tender for the Versova-Dahisar connector is underway with the work set to be completed in six phases. The crucial link will connect to GMLR and the Dahisar-Mira Road connector. This project is expected to be ready by 2029. The BMC has made a provision of R4,250 crore for this project and the final stage of work pertaining to the Worli-Nariman Point coastal link.
