Students of civic-run schools are set to get new uniforms soon as the BMC has set up a committee which, along with help from industry experts, will zero in on a new design.

"We have already started CBSE and ICSE board schools. From the next academic year IG and International board schools, too, will commence. We are getting good responses from parents. We are also working on a digital education system. With so many changes in BMC-managed schools, the administration has now decided to change the school uniform too," said Joint Municipal commissioner Ajit Kumbhar.

In order to decide on what the new uniform should be, the administration has appointed a panel. "The panel, along with experts from the industry, will decide on the colour combination of the uniform," Kumbhar said.

The last time BMC made changes to its uniform was in 2009. BMC schools have witnessed a major overhaul in the last couple of years and the changes have been appreciated by citizens as enrolments have gone up.

Changing perception

"Nearly 29,000 new students enrolled in BMC schools in the current academic year," Kumbhar said.

"BMC has embarked on a drive to change the perception of civic schools among the public. We are getting good response for the CBSE board schools, so we will increase the intake capacity by 960 from next academic year," an education officer said.

"Central and International board school uniforms will be the same. We can't differentiate among students," said an officer.

Digital classrooms

"Till date, 1,214 BMC classrooms are digital and 1,300 more classrooms will be converted into digital ones. BMC started installing digital boards in classrooms and is planning to complete this work by June. The project will cost us Rs 36.79 crore. Our teachers are already trained for digital education," said another officer, adding that the plan is to increase the number of digital classrooms to more than 9,000.
