The Charkop police on Wednesday arrested a 30-year-old man who allegedly buried his nine-day-old infant behind a nursery in Kandivali. The buried infant was a girl.
The police were alerted by one Dinesh Pashte (34), a signboard painter residing in Charkop. Pashte witnessed the couple burying the child on Tuesday. The incident happened at 10.40 am. He was waiting for a friend near a nursery close to the metro station when he observed the couple in the vacant space behind the nursery; the arrestee was spotted carrying a white bundle on his shoulder.
"I tried following them, but they disappeared into the bushes. They emerged nearly 30 minutes later without the white bundle," Pashte said. He informed the nursery owner about the incident as well. Pashte and the nursery owner, upon the former's return from work, visited the spot and saw something was buried. "We contacted the police around midnight on Wednesday," Pashte said.
Upon arrival, the cops dug the spot and exhumed the dead body of a newborn baby girl. The body was sent to Shatabdi Hospital. Acting on Pashte's complaint, the cops registered an FIR under Sections 318 (concealment of birth) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code against the couple.

During the probe, the couple were traced. Balloon sellers by occupation, the couple had birthed the girl nine days ago but she was weak and could not consume milk. The infant, due to lack of medical attention, passed away on Monday.
"Without notifying the hospital or authorities, they dug a hole near the nursery and buried the child," an officer from Charkop police station disclosed.
While the man was arrested, considering the woman's ill health, she was admitted to a hospital for treatment, the officer added.
