The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) appealed to citizens to share their views about community toilets. This is the first time the civic body has sought opinions from the public on the subject.

The BMC has decided to repair and reconstruct more than 14,000 community toilets, which are mainly in slums. "Citizens must suggest what type of construction and facilities they want," said a BMC official.

The official added, "The list of public toilets that are going to be repaired has been posted on the BMC portal. Citizens can send their suggestions within the next 15 days to the email address che.swm@mcgm.gov.in."

Stating that there had been several complaints about the quality of public toilets in the past, an official said, "This time we appointed a project management consultant for this task. The actual work will start soon."

According to civic documents, the BMC is going to repair and reconstruct 14,166 toilets at a cost of R542.42 crore. The entire project is expected to be completed in 12 months. "There are different timescales for each toilet. Those with less than 20 seats will be constructed in six months, 20-to-40-seat ones will be built in nine months and those with over 41 seats will be set up in 12 months."
