Mumbai: BMC awaits green light for the new Mahim Causeway bridge

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is waiting for the No-Objection Certificate (NOC) of the Environment Department to start work on the construction of the Mahim Causeway bridge.

According to the records, in 2019, the BMC decided to construct a new bridge at Mahim Causeway, replacing the old one as the current bridge is like a bottleneck. "In August 2023, the BMC received permission from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA)," said a BMC official. "There are still a few NOCs pending with the Environment Department for the construction of the bridge over the Mahim Creek," the officials added.

The Chief Engineer of the Bridge Department, Vivek Kalyankar, said, "We are awaiting the NOC from the environment department. We won't demolish the old bridge immediately. Once a section of the new bridge is completed, we'll initiate traffic from a single lane. Subsequently, we'll demolish the old bridge and proceed with constructing another part of the new bridge."

BMC has decided to increase the width of the bridge to 52 metres from 31.8 metres which will help ease traffic woes in the area. The new bridge will have 10 lanes, which is an upgrade on the old bridge that had only six lanes. The construction of the bridge will take 36 months and the cost of the project is estimated at Rs 103 crore.

The causeway was built between 1841 and 1843 and incurred a total cost of Rs 2.03 lakh, with Lady Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy contributing Rs 1.55 lakh towards the funding.
