A toddler drowned tragically at Juhu beach when her mother fell into the water while carrying her, on Saturday morning. The police have recorded the incident and are investigating the matter.
According to the police, the child, Kayla Kavle, who was a nineteen-months old, was in a baby carrier strapped to her mother's body. The mother, Namrata Kavle (28), a resident of Santacruz (East), had gone shopping at Santacruz (West) around 10 am. When she found that the shops where she wanted to buy clothes for Kayla and herself were yet to open, she decided to go for a walk to Juhu beach until the shops opened. It was high tide and she was standing at the water's edge, when she lost her balance and fell into the water.
With the baby strapped to her, she found it difficult to stand up quickly and lost consciousness. An hour later, visitors spotted her lying on the beach with the child still strapped to her. Both were unconscious, the police said.
Shantanu Pawar, senior inspector, Santacruz police station, said, "The locals raised an alarm thinking it was a case of attempted suicide and called the police. The police took the mother and daughter to Cooper Hospital where the child was declared dead. We have recorded the statement of the mother, who is out of danger now. She narrated the entire incident to us, calling it an accident. We are investigating the case."
The officer said, "We have recorded the statements of the woman's husband and the locals who had spotted her at the beach. She lives with her husband in the Golibar area of Santacruz. An accidental death report has been registered in the matter."
