Mumbai: 5,000 families in Gorai without water for days

A water tanker provides succour to Gorai locals

Around 5,000 families in the village of Gorai have been dealing with water scarcity for about a week, compelling locals to depend on BMC tankers. Watchdog Foundation, a non-government organisation, has warned of a Handa Morcha at the office of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's R Central Ward if the matter is not resolved.

The areas affected by the shortage are Lower Koliwada, Upper Koliwada, Bhandar Wada, Jui Pada and Beach Road.

"The water pressure was low for some days and since the past four days, there has been no water supply," Lesita Kinny, a local, said.

Villagers faced the same problem last year. "This is an annual issue. Dams are full but we are facing a problem. It forces us to rely on tankers sent by the civic body and bottled water," Kinny said.

Machindra Kshirsagar, a resident of Jui Pada, said, "We have to buy water bottles. We have been complaining to the BMC for days, but the water problem has not been solved yet."

Royston Godinho, another local, said, "A BMC tanker has been coming to our area. These tankers are not enough. The water shortage is creating a big problem for the village."

Calls to Pravin Vichare, assistant commissioner of R Central Ward went unanswered at the time of going to print.
