Girlfriend tells police they were attacked on Mahim beach by two unknown men who had also tried to molest her

Washim Chaudhary, the deceased

A 21-year-old was killed and his partner injured when two unknown people attacked the couple with a knife on Mahim beach in the wee hours of Wednesday, said police. The girlfriend alleged that the men tried to molest her and attacked them when they fought back. The deceased has been identified as Washim Chaudhary, a resident of Govandi who worked as a driver. His girlfriend, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital, told police that she somehow managed to escape after they were attacked.

Chaudhary's family has accused the girlfriend of being involved in the murder, claiming that she is a drug addict because of which she was thrown out of her own house. Police said the incident occurred between 2 am and 2.30 am on Wednesday. Chaudhary had left home at 1 pm on Tuesday to meet his friends. In the evening, he met his girlfriend and they decided to go to Mahim Dargah and reached there around 12-12.30 am. Later, they went to the beach where they were attacked by two men.

Police said the woman sustained injuries on her neck and hand, and the accused stabbed Chaudhary and fled. Meanwhile, his girlfriend took a taxi to Bhabha hospital, they added. A police officer said, "At 3 am, we received information from Bhabha hospital about the incident and we rushed to the beach and found a body. We immediately rushed him to Sion hospital where he was declared dead before admission."

Police sources said, "We have found out that both were drug addicts and consumed drugs frequently. But Chaudhary's murder is still a mystery." Chaudhary's mother Jannatunisha told mid-day, "We suspect that his girlfriend, who is addicted to drugs, killed him. Police should investigate it. Her parents had thrown her out of the house two months back and she hasn't been back there since. She would carry a knife and a blade on her daily."

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mahim Division, Arundhati Rane said, "As per the victim's complaint, we have registered a case under Sections 302 (murder) 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 (common intention) of IPC. We are checking all the CCTV cameras for some more information on the movement of people towards the crime spot. Several teams have been formed to track the attackers. Crime branch's unit 5 is also investigating the matter."
