The Mankhurd police have arrested a 22-year-old history sheeter who had attacked a police constable with a sword in the wee hours of Sunday. The accused has been identified as Salman Abdul Rahim Khan.
Salman Abdul Rahim Khan has been involved in several crimes since the last five years
On Saturday, a father of a 14-year-old arrived at the Mankhurd police station to register a case against Khan for abducting his daughter. That's when the cops received information about Khan being present at the Mandala area in Mankhurd.
An officer from Mankhurd police station said, "Immediately after we received the information, we dispatched a team in order to rescue the girl and catch the culprit who had been externed in 2013."
The injured constable Maruti Waghmare told mid-day, "I came to the police station and was asked to go to Mandala in Mankhurd to catch an accused involved in a kidnapping case. We went to Mandala and when he saw us, he abandoned the child and started running. We chased him and found the spot where he was hiding."
He added, "However, he saw me and just as I was about to get hold of him, he attacked me with a sword. He tried to strike me on the head but I evaded it by raising my hand. After attacking me, the accused kept brandishing the sword to scare the others." After the attack, Khan escaped and the injured constable was admitted to hospital. The constable sustained seven stitches on his left hand.
Finally, on Tuesday, the Mankhurd police received a tip-off that the accused Khan was about to arrive at Mankhurd railway station in order to meet his associate. The cops laid a trap and nabbed the accused. PSI Pravin Pandey from Mankhurd police station said, "We have nabbed the accused and he claims that he had been hiding in Vashi."
The accused has been booked under section 307 (attempt to murder), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 506 (2) of the Indian Penal Code with sections 4 and 25 under the Arms Act and section 142 under the Bombay Police Act.
Criminal family
Khan has been involved in several crimes over the last five years. His father too has been involved in criminal activities and his uncle has been externed earlier.
