The 2 km long sea bridge will have 3 km long approach roads on either side
Good news for the commuters travelling between Rewas and Karanja in Raigad district. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has finally invited bids for Request for Qualification for the construction of a four-lane bridge across Dharamtar Creek. For many years, there was a demand from locals for a bridge across Rewas creek.
An MSRDC official said, "We have invited bids for Request for Qualification (RFQ) for constructing a four-lane creek bridge connecting Rewas with Karanja in Raigad district and we are expecting a positive response for the same. Once complete the bridge will save commuters a lot of time and fuel." At present, motorists going to Rewas have to travel 70 km via road to reach Karanja, which takes over two hours to reach. The ferry services take 15 minutes between the two locations. However, during the monsoon, travelling becomes extremely difficult, as ferry services are shut.
The estimated budget for the project is over Rs 3,000 crore. The 2 km long sea bridge will have 3 km long approach roads on either side. Once the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) connecting Sewri with Nhava Sheva in Raigad is operational, then this Rewas-Karanja bridge will help tourists heading towards Alibag and Murud. It is said work is expected to commence post-monsoon, and once it starts, the bridge will be ready in three-four years. The project will require a Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) clearance.
