The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation has fined a contractor for violations during construction of a road. An official on Monday told PTI that a fine of Rs 44.94 lakh was imposed on the contractor by the civic administration. According to the report, MBMC had given contract to a company named GEPC to construct the road between Shubam Arcade and Maheshwari Bhavan road.

At the time of inspection of the road, the revenue officials found that the contractor had used sand to fill the surface and that he had obtained the material without paying any royalty to the government. The official said that a fine of Rs 44.94 lakh was imposed on the contractor based on an order dated August 25.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had recently levied a fine of Rs 25,000 on a contractor over delays in the construction of a skywalk in Kurla West. The civic agency had issued a work order on August 18, 2021, and the skywalk should have been erected by April 2023. The civic body had given the contractor a tender worth Rs 14.69 crore for erecting the skywalk which would cross Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg and connect to Taximen's Colony and New mill Road.

Meanwhile, the BMC revised the deadline for the project and said that the structure will be ready by April 2024. They claimed the delay was caused by underground utilities and residents' opposition to piling work and wait for permissions from various civic departments.

The agency had levied a fine of Rs 6.4 crores on five different contractors for not maintaining the concretised roads, media reports. The five contractors were awarded tenders for concretization and maintenance of the roads in the city - a project undertaken after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had announced plan to make city pothole-free last year. Reportedly some contractors - who were awarded contracts of Rs 6000 crore mega project - had told the civic agency that they won't be able to take up maintenance as they have not undertaken repair work of the roads yet. However, the civic agency was firm that the contractors maintain all the roads for which a tender was floated.
