Maharashtra: Teenager drowns while swimming in Thane's Upvan Lake

Thane civic authorities have launched efforts to locate the missing boy with the help of disaster management teams

A 17-year-old boy drowned in Upvan Lake in Thane, Maharashtra. He had allegedly gone missing while swimming with his friends on Monday. The incident occurred at around 01:45 pm near Ganapati Visarjan Ghat in Thane, the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation said on Monday.

The RDMC said that the incident was reported to the disaster management unit at around 2:12 pm following which the civic officials rushed to the spot to locate the boy.

According to the RDMC, upon receiving the information, local authorities swiftly mobilized resources to initiate a search and rescue operation. Present at the scene are officers from the Vartaknagar Police, the Disaster Management officials and rescue personnel from the Disaster Management Cell, etc. The team was supported by one pickup vehicle, one bus vehicle, one rescue vehicle, and one fire brigade vehicle.

The personnel from the disaster management cell, the fire brigade and other civic officials conducted a thorough search operation in the vicinity of the incident. They were equipped with two boats, the teams are diligently scouring the area in hopes of locating the missing teenager, the RDMC said.

His body was fished out at 5:10 pm. His body has been sent for post mortem. Vartak Nagar police has registered a case and is probing further," the RDMC said.

The teenager have been identified as Aditya Pawar, a student of class 12th at Thakur College in Savarkar Nagar, Thane. The officials are trying to trace Pawar, the RDMC said.

Meanwhile, in an another incident, a 11-year-old boy reportedly drowned in a dam in Virar of Maharashtra's Palghar district, an official from the fire brigade said on Monday, reported the PTI.

The incident took place at Papadkhind dam, where a group of people went for an outing on Sunday evening, the official said.

Three boys in the age group of 10 to 11 years were playing in the water, when they were swept away, he said.

People nearby managed to rescue two of the boys, but were unable to save the third one, the official said.

The fire brigade rushed to the spot and fished out the body of Om Borade, he said, adding that a case of accidental death has been registered.

The district administration and police have issued warnings, asking people not to visit water bodies in the district to prevent such incidents. However, despite the advisory, people have been thronging such areas during monsoon.
