Maharashtra has clocked the second-highest electric vehicle (EV) sales among all the states with a 13 per cent share in overall sales in India, in December 2021. Among all states and union territories, Uttar Pradesh continues to have maximum monthly registered EV sales with a 23 per cent share. Maharashtra is followed by Karnataka (9 per cent), Rajasthan (8 per cent), Delhi (7 per cent), and Tamil Nadu (7 per cent).
According to a report by JMK Research and Analytics, in December 2021, electric vehicle registrations across the country surpassed the 50,000-unit mark in a month. Overall EV sales in December 2021 clocked 50,866 units, recording a 240 per cent year-on-year growth from the number recorded in the corresponding month in the previous year. This is the first time that EV registrations have crossed 50,000 in a month, the report said.
Sources said the boost in Maharashtra's figures is due to the supportive policy of the state. In July 2021, the Maharashtra government had introduced the EV Policy 2021 to support the adoption of sustainable and clean mobility solutions in Maharashtra. The policy aims to transform Maharashtra into a leading state in terms of adoption of electric vehicles in the country, retain the state's leadership in automotive manufacturing and emerge as a leading investment hub for the EV ecosystem globally.
