Thane: 42-year-old man dies as building slab collapses in Ulhasnagar

A 42-year-old man died and another was injured when a slab collapsed in a building at Ulhasnagar in Thane district on Thursday afternoon, a fire brigade official said. The incident took place at Komal Park building in Goal Maidan area around 2 pm, he said.

A fire brigade team rushed to the spot for rescue work and the building was being vacated, the official said.

The building was earmarked as C-2B (structure only requires repairs) three times till now by Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation but reportedly no repairs were carried out. After today's incident, the 6-storey building has been vacated and all the residents have been given shelter in Thahiriya Singh Sahab Darbar.

The Komal Park building was constructed in 1994 and had six floors housing 21 families and two commercial shops.

"The building was issued first notice marking it as C-2B (structure only requires repairs) three times viz. August 2, 2021, May 4, 2022 and June 14, 2022," told Additional Commissioner Jamir Lengrekar. "But no structural audit was carried out to find what repair work has to been done" he added.

On Thursday morning, Jatin Chailani, owner of flat number 502 told the watchman to find two daily wage workers to work on cracks developed at the ceiling. "The flat was given on rent and the owner arranged for two workers to plaster the ceiling. But as soon as worker hammered the ceiling it collapsed trapping both the workers under it" told an official from Ulhasnagar police station.

One worker was trapped under debris completely while the other one's leg got stuck. Both were rushed to Central Hospital, Ulhasnagar but one was declared dead on arrival while the other injured shifted to a private hospital. The deceased worker has been identified as Khalilur Rehman (42).

After the incident, UMC commissioner Aziz Sheikh, Additional Commissioner Jamir Lengrekar, Ganesh Shimpi, and Senior Inspector of Ulhasnagar Police station Rajendra Kadam visited the building and decided to vacate the building.

All the residents of the building have been shifted to Thahiriya Singh Sahab Darbar. While Ulhasnagar police are probing the matter.
