The draft development plan for the Navi Mumbai area in Maharashtra, the first since the civic body was established 33 years ago, has been submitted to the state government for approval, Navi Mumbai municipal administrator Rajesh Narvekar said on Friday, reported the PTI.

The draft development plan was published on August 10, 2022, under Section 26(1) of the Maharashtra Regional Planning and Town Planning Act 1966 and more than 16,000 suggestions and objections were received, an official said, as per the PTI.

"We formed a planning committee to address these concerns. The committee submitted its report to the NMMC administrator on February 16. Among the key changes proposed in the draft development plan is the optimization of reserved plots. The total number of reservations have been reduced from 625 to 537," the official said, according to the PTI.

The draft plan lays emphasis on developing sports facilities, redevelopment of schools and buildings and reorganisation of public amenities, he said.

The plan also aims to unlock the development potential of private lands in areas like Airoli, Digha, Ilathan, Borivali, Adivali, and Bhootvali by reserving plots for road networks and public facilities to boost overall development.

Meanwhile, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) in Maharashtra on Tuesday tabled Rs 4,950 crore budget.

Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar on Tuesday approved a budget of Rs 4,950 crore for 2024-25, with no hike in taxes and emphasis on public welfare and civic development, reported the PTI.

Talking to PTI, Narvekar said an inclusive approach was adopted while formulating the budget, and suggestions from citizens were also incorporated.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation is expecting Rs 1,626 crore in Goods and Services Tax, Rs 900 crore in property tax, Rs 244 crore in government grants, Rs 104 crore from water cess, and Rs 90 crore by way of registration incomes and permits, among other income, he said, as per the PTI.

In the budget, Rs 954 crore have been earmarked for civic amenities, Rs 865 crore for administrative services, Rs 521 crore for water supply and sanitation, Rs 432 crore for solid waste management, Rs 216 crore for health services, Rs 250 crore for transport and Rs 180 crore for education, the official said.

Addressing concerns about pollution, especially due to infrastructure projects such as the Navi Mumbai airport and city redevelopment works, Narvekar assured measures to mitigate pollution levels.

The budget aims for swift completion of ongoing projects while upholding quality standards, facilitating accelerated city development and improving the quality of life for residents, he said.
