The proposed bridge that will connect Revas and Karanja

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has invited bids for the construction of a four-lane bridge across Dharamtar creek that will link Revas with Karanja on the Revas Reddi Coastal Highway in Raigad. The 2.05-km-long bridge will benefit tourists going to Alibaug, as it will help save both time and fuel spent on travelling via road.

Once the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) connecting Sewri with Nhava Sheva in Raigad is operational, this bridge will also help tourists heading towards Alibaug and Murud.

As per the bid document, "MSRDC is engaged in the development of coastal highway MSH-04 and as part of this endeavour, the authority has decided to undertake the construction of a four-lane major bridge across Dharamtar creek connecting Revas to Karanja in Raigad district on Revas-Reddi coastal highway MSH-04, in the State of Maharashtra on (EPC) mode."

The estimated project cost of the bridge is Rs 897.68 crore and the company that wins the bid will have to complete the construction in 36 months and maintain it for 120 months. The bid can be submitted on or before December 5.

The bridge will have two carriageways of 13.5 metres each with a median of 1.2 metres open to the sky and motorists will be able to drive at a maximum speed of 80 kmph. For safe usage by pedestrians, there will be a 1.5-metre-wide footpath. The work on the bridge will be done in two phases - the structure will be built in phase 1 and the approach roads on either side in the second phase.

At present, motorists going to Revas have to travel 70 km via road to reach Karanja, a journey that takes more than two hours. Once the bridge is built, the trip will take less than 10 minutes.

Ferry rides take 15 minutes to shuttle between the two locations. But during the monsoon, they are shut and people travelleing to Revas from Karanja have to take the road. The project will require a clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.
