State’s pass percentage rises, with Mumbai division showing improvement despite ranking last; Konkan emerges as top-performing division

The state's overall pass percentage for HSC results has improved significantly since pre-COVID times. However, the Mumbai division ranked last among all nine divisions in the state. This year, the state's pass rate is 93.37 per cent, up from last year's 91.25 per cent. Konkan division performed the best with a 97.51 per cent pass rate. Mumbai had the lowest pass rate at 91.95 per cent, despite improving from last year's 88.13 per cent. Mumbai also had the highest number of candidates, with 3,19,910 students.

Mumbai performance (sub-division wise)

The Mumbai division includes Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Mumbai city, and suburbs. Greater Mumbai had the lowest pass percentage among these regions at 89.06 per cent. Raigad had the highest at 94.83 per cent, followed by Palghar at 93.51 per cent.

Here are the pass percentages for each region:
>> Thane: 92.08 per cent
>> Palghar: 93.51 per cent
>> Raigad: 94.83 per cent
>> Greater Mumbai: 89.06 per cent
>> Mumbai Suburbs 1 (Bandra to Dahisar): 91.87 per cent
>> Mumbai Suburbs 2 (Kurla to Mulund): 90.33 per cent

Overall performance
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) announced the HSC (Std XII) results online on Tuesday for all nine divisions: Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar), Mumbai, Kolhapur, Amravati, Nashik, and Latur.

This year, the overall pass percentage stands at 93.37 per cent, with Konkan, Nashik, and Pune securing the top three positions with pass percentages of 97.51 per cent, 94.71 per cent, and 94.44 per cent respectively.

Year-on-year comparison:
>> 2023: 91.25 per cent
>> 2022: 94.22 per cent
>> 2021: 99.63 per cent (an atypical year due to the pandemic)
>> 2020: 90.66 per cent
>> 2019: 85.88 per cent

Streamwise performance:

The science stream performed the best with a pass percentage of 97.82 per cent this year. In arts, commerce, vocational, and ITI, the pass percentages are 85.88 per cent, 92.18 per cent, 87.75 per cent, and 87.69 per cent respectively. Last year, 96.09 per cent of students passed the science stream, while in commerce and arts, the pass percentages were 90.42 per cent and 84.05 per cent respectively.

Talking about the increase in pass percentage this year, a senior official from the Mumbai divisional board (MSBSHSE) said, "It took a year's time for things to get back to normal, after the COVID-19 pandemic. The results have improved as compared to last year. We expect the performances to improve even more next year."

Mumbai's performance

In the Maharashtra HSC exam, the Mumbai division had 3,21,116 candidates registered, with 3,19,910 appearing and 2,94,158 passing. The division achieved a pass percentage of 91.95 per cent. According to an official from the Mumbai divisional board, "Despite ranking lowest among all divisions, Mumbai has notably improved its pass percentage from 88.13 per cent last year to 91.95 per cent this year. It's worth noting that Mumbai had the highest number of students appearing among all divisions."

Thane
In Thane region, which includes 11 sub-regions like Kalyan (Rural), Ambarnath, and Thane (Municipal Area), the pass percentage was 92.80 per cent.
