The Maharashtra government will soon set rules on renting out premises in buildings, informed state Woman and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare.

Tatkare's statement has come after a 35-year-old woman lodged a police complaint accusing a man and his son of refusing to rent out premises in a building to her as she is Marathi speaking.

As per the police, an 80-year-old man and his son have been charged with denying office space to a 35-year-old woman at the Mulund-based Shiv Sadan building.

The duo faces charges under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code. They were presented in court and subsequently released on bail.

In response to the incident, Aditi Tatkare met with the complainant at her residence, assuring her of stringent action against the accused.

Addressing the media, Tatkare expressed that refusing premises based on someone being Marathi-speaking is regrettable and deserves condemnation.

The police have formally lodged a complaint against the alleged offenders, and the Women's Commission has taken serious cognizance of the matter, she confirmed.

The state government is deeply concerned about the issue and is actively working on formulating a set of regulations governing the renting out of premises, Tatkare added.
