Maharashtra: 55 passengers injured as bus collides with truck in Palghar

On Friday morning, around 55 passengers, most of them students, were injured when the bus they were travelling in collided with a truck in Palghar district.

According to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) official, the accident took place around 6.45 a.m. near Desai village in Wada tehsil.

"The bus involved in the accident was operated by the MSRTC. It was carrying a large number of school and college students," the corporation's Thane divisional controller Vilas Rathod said.

As per the data provided by MSRTC, a total of 70 passengers were travelling in the bus when it collided with a truck. Of them, 55 passengers, including 47 students, were injured.

The truck was coming from the opposite direction on Chinchpada-Wada Road. "None of the passengers suffered any major injury," the official added.

"All the injured persons including the bus driver, were taken to local hospitals," the MSRTC official said.

"After primary treatment, all of them were allowed to return home," he said. Police inspector Suresh Kadam confirmed that the injured included a large number of students.

Recently, a fully packed Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) bus which was on its way to Kharghar railway station caught fire with more than 50 passengers on board. According to the official, there were no casualties reported. the incident took place on September 6, Wednesday, near Sector 15 in Kharghar.

Following the fire incident, the NMMT bus was transported to the garage, where officials inspected it to check the origin of the smoke and ascertain if any foul play was involved.

Speaking to mid-day reporter the NMMT officer revealed, "This is the Jan bus variant of Ashok Leyland, and before this, two more buses of the same variant experienced fires and smoke. Similar incidents have occurred in Thane and Kalyan."
