In a remarkable display of swift and efficient response, the Indian Coast Guard successfully averted a potential environmental disaster today when they rescued the research ship RV Sindhu Sadhana of the prestigious National Institute of Oceanography (NIO).
The vessel had suffered engine failure and was drifting perilously close to Karwar, with eight scientists and a total crew of 36 on board.
The distress call was received when the NIO's state-of-the-art research vessel was approximately 20 nautical miles from the ecologically sensitive Karwar coastline, adrift at a speed of 03 knots. The situation was critical, as the ship was carrying valuable scientific equipment and research data, raising concerns of potential damage and loss.
"Upon receiving the distress signal, the Indian Coast Guard launched a high-priority rescue operation with great urgency. Their advanced Ship, manned by a skilled team, was immediately dispatched to the area to prevent any further escalation of the situation." the ICG said in a statement.
