Of the 19 dead and more than 120 injured in yesterday's derailment, 38 were shifted to various hospitals in Mumbai from afternoon onwards.

A 3-year-old lost her mother, who succumbed to her injuries at Sion hospital, and a 45-year-old was brought dead there. Among the injured were also some who could not make it to happy occasions like a friend's wedding and a puja at their new temple.

While 18 patients were admitted to the civic-run KEM hospital in Parel, 15 were accommodated in Sion hospital and another five in the state-run JJ hospital.

Dr Suleman Merchant, acting dean of Sion hospital,said, "We were expecting around 50 patients and had made arrangements accordingly but only 15 patients were admitted till 8 pm.

A 45-year-old unidentified male was brought dead and a female patient succumbed to her injuries. The other patients, who mostly suffered shoulder and limb injuries, are stable as of now."

A separate ward was given to female patients. "Samrudhi Nagte (3), one of the daughters of the woman who died, is admitted to our hospital with injuries to her left leg.

Her father, Jairam, is being treated in the general ward," said Dr Merchant. He added that Samrudhi's older sister is missing and the eldest sibling is admitted in an Alibaug hospital.

Five patients were admitted to JJ Hospital. Dr TP Lahane, dean, said, "A 65-year-old woman and 32-year-old Rajaram Pawar have suffered brain injuries.

The other patients are stable." At the KEM hospital in Parel, the flow of patients started around 3pm. One of the accident victims, Prashant Salvi (24) was heading to Mahad with three others for his friend's wedding when the accident took place.

"Prashant and another friend sustained injuries while the other two managed to escape harm. He suffered from an abrasion on his cheek and his ears were also hurt," said Prashant's brother Praveen, a Sakinaka resident. Another victim, Rohini Baikar (60) was also on the way to Mahad with her son Sandesh (30) but was rushed to Roha Civil Hospital with an injured left arm.

She was shifted to KEM from there. "She was going to visit a small temple they constructed in front of their house to conduct a puja. Unfortunately, it ended like this.

We are waiting for her CT scan reports to determine the extent of her injuries," said a relative. Baikar's son sustained a hip fracture and is recuperating in the general ward.

There were several people waiting outside the toilet and once our coach fell on the left side, the toilet door broke due to the weight of the others and we were stuck in that position for nearly half an hour. Shards from the mirror injured my arms. Luckily, some locals rescued us. - Sushila Chavan (45)

I had lost my arm in a previous accident. All I remember about this one is that the train, which was very crowded, suddenly jerked soon after it came out from the tunnel and derailed. I lost my consciousness and directly woke up in the hospital. - Babaram Bhandare (48)

I was standing when the train suddenly derailed. I was lucky enough not to be hurled out of the train, but got injured since all of us fell on each other due to the impact. I have sustained injuries on my legs, chest and waist. - Suman Padwal (40)
