There is good news for commuters facing traffic near the domestic airport on the southbound end of the Western Express Highway (WEH) as the new 700-metre-long flyover, adjacent to the existing one, is nearing completion and set to open in the third week of February.

"The project of T1 on the WEH flyover near the domestic airport is almost complete except for some miscellaneous work," a Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) official said. The construction of the flyover project started in June 2021 at a cost of Rs 48.43 crore (provisional). "The flyover will be ready to open by February 15, 2024," the official added.

At present, motorists getting out of Terminal 2 and going towards Bandra or south Mumbai via the Sahar Elevated Access Road get stuck in traffic on the WEH near the domestic airport signal. With the construction of this two-lane flyover adjacent to the existing domestic airport flyover, motorists will be able to bypass the traffic jam and the signal while going towards Bandra via WEH.

Anuradha Jogalekar, a regular commuter, said, "I am eagerly waiting for the new flyover to open as it will help me commute faster. I will no longer get stuck in traffic as this flyover will help me bypass the domestic airport signal." Currently, during peak hours, vehicles get stuck in traffic for 5-15 minutes. Once open, the flyover will help save time and fuel.
