A 61-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself while his 57-year-old wife was found lying dead next to him in their Mumbai flat, a police official said on Monday, reported news agency PTI.
A foul smell emanated from their Mumbai flat at the Anubhuti Society at Arya Chanakyanagar in Kandivali on Sunday following which their neighbours alerted police, reported PTI.
The police reached the spot and broke the door of the Mumbai flat.
They found Pramod Vasudev Chonkar hanging from a ceiling fan with a nylon rope and his wife Arpita Pramod Chonkar lying dead next to him, the official from Samta Nagar police station said, reported PTI.
The bodies had decomposed, he said, adding the couple did not have children.
A note was found at the spot in which the man mentioned they were mentally depressed and that they were taking the step on their own wish, and no one should be held responsible for it, the official said, reported PTI.
Based on preliminary information, the police registered an accidental death report and an investigation was underway, he said.
In another incident, the body of an unidentified man, age around 50, was found on Parsik Hill on Saturday following which a case of murder was registered, Navi Mumbai police said, reported PTI.
The victim was probably hit with a stone and had injuries on the head, neck and nose, said senior inspector Giridhar Gore of CBD police station, reported PTI.
He had also been attacked with a sharp weapon.
Further probe was on, the official said.
Meanwhile, police have arrested a 22-year-old woman for allegedly killing her husband with an axe while he was asleep at home in Wada taluka of Maharashtra's Palghar district, an official said on Saturday, reported PTI.
The incident occurred on May 8 and the victim was identified as 26-year-old Ajay Raghunath Bochal, they said, reported PTI.
"After the body was found, his wife Anita told the police that the victim was attacked by some unidentified person during the intervening night. The police registered a case of murder and formed teams to nab the suspects," inspector Datta Kindre of the Wada police station said, reported PTI.
As the crime had taken place in the house when all the family members were present in the house, it was very difficult to find the real accused. The police probed if the victim had any love affair, he said, reported PTI.
"The police extensively interrogated all the family members and came to know that the victim used to doubt his wife's character and target her by linking her to another man. This annoyed her wife and she eventually attacked her husband with an axe in the middle of the night," he added, reported PTI.
After her interrogation, the police arrested her and produced her before a magistrate, who remanded her into police custody, the official said.
