The rickety old rakes on the Central Railway (CR) will soon make way for new ones. The authorities are getting 24 new rakes in the next two months. This is the first step towards phasing out the old rakes that are over 20 years old.
"We will be getting 24 new rakes from Chennai's Integral Coach Factory in the next two months," confirmed DK Sharma, general manager, CR.
Of the 24 rakes, 13 will replace older ones and the remaining 11 will be additional.
Sources said the 13 old rakes - those retrofitted into AC from DC to enable them to ply after the power upgrade to 25,000 volts - will be replaced. "These rakes have a codal life of another 2-3 years," said a CR official. A codal life (period up to which it can run) of a suburban EMU rake is 25 years.
Officials said they have decided to operate the new rakes on the Harbour line extension beyond Andheri till Goregaon from the CST, and also on the Seawoods-Uran stretch.
