The welcome slide continued on Monday, with Mumbai reporting 2,662 fresh infections. Numbers released by the BMC showed that 5,746 people were discharged during the day in the city and 54,143 patients are still under treatment for COVID. The Coronavirus claimed 78 lives in 24 hours.
Of the fatalities, 50 victims were comorbid. While 52 patients were male and 26 female, 53 deaths were of people above the age of 60. Officials said 20 were between 40 and 60. The recovery rate of Mumbai has improved to 89 per cent and the doubling rate stands at 111 days.
Maharashtra saw a significant drop in the number of daily cases on Monday, with 48,621 new infections and 567 fatalities being reported in the last 24 hours. The overall death tally has risen to 47,71,022, with 70, 851 deaths since the pandemic began.
Dr Tatyarao Lahane, director of Directorate of Medical Education and Research said, "We have seen the new cases stabilising in 19 districts across the state. The numbers will come down further in the next 15 days. The stabilisation will be replicated across the other districts too in the coming days," he said. "This trend has reduced the load on our medical infrastructure also. There is no problem now with the oxygen supply," added Lahane.
The BMC has added 200 more beds to Goregaon's NESCO Jumbo COVID centre, which could accommodate 2,200 patients earlier. The centre will get another 1,300 more beds to become a 3,700-bed facility. It will then have 1,000 beds with oxygen supply.
