COVID-19: No. of tests almost same, but Mumbai cases hit 1,963

Sources said that while it had taken almost three-and-a-half months to hit a low of 400 cases daily, within a month the situation has gone back to what it was.

Daily COVID-19 cases further increased on Sunday with the city reporting 1,963 fresh infections, a five-fold increase since February 9 when the fresh cases were 375. While the test positivity rate (TPR) hit 9.5 per cent on Sunday, the recovery rate slightly decreased to 92 per cent. The state also registered more than 16,000 fresh cases and 50 deaths.

Sources said that while it had taken almost three-and-a-half months to hit a low of 400 cases daily, within a month the situation has gone back to what it was. On Sunday, a total of 20,695 tests were conducted. Though the number of daily tests have been more or less the same over the past one week, the number of cases increased from 1,360 to almost 2,000.

With the recovery of 1,259 patients, the city now has 14,000 active cases and the recovery rate has dropped by 2 per cent. The city had 5,000 active patients a month ago, on February 12. The city reported a total of seven deaths on the same day. All patients were above 60 years of age and five had comorbidities.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) reported 3,676 cases, including the ones in Mumbai. Other cities like Thane recorded 356 cases, Navi Mumbai 224 and Kalyan-Dombivli 417. The MMR saw four deaths, excluding Mumbai's tally.

Out of the state's 16,620 fresh cases, Akola circle reported 1,388, Pune Circle 3,609, Nashik 2,776 and Nagpur 2,862. Nashik recorded 16 deaths and Nagpur registered 12. The state's recovery rate has dropped to 92 per cent. A total of 8,861 patients were discharged across Maharashtra on Friday, and the number of active cases increased to 1.26 lakh. The state had around 30,000 active cases in the first week of February.
