With the spread of the disease slowing down, officials said, they focussed on checking mortality. The NMMC reported 67 fatalities in December 2020, the lowest since the beginning of the pandemic. But not a single day had passed when there were no COVID deaths.

To reduce the daily cases and eventually deaths, NMMC chief Abhijeet Bangar had launched ‘Mission Break The Chain' and ‘Mission Zero Navi Mumbai'. As part of this drive, NMMC officials, volunteers had visited each and every household for screening and testing.

On Tuesday's big zero, Bangar said, "This is welcome news, we expect to have more such days henceforth as our entire NMMC team is working tirelessly towards zero mortality."

The civic commissioner added, "Since day one, we all are working with the aim of Zero COVID deaths. As the number of active cases are going down, we are expecting a reduction in deaths too."
