Covid-19: New cases rise in both Mumbai and across Maharashtra

After witnessing daily cases below 1,000 for the past three days, Mumbai saw a significant rise in new cases as well as the test positivity rate. According to the BMC report, 1,128 new cases were recorded and the TPR stood at 2.44 per cent on Wednesday. On February 1, for the first time this year, the TPR had fallen below 2 and was at 1.55 per cent.

In the third wave, the highest TPR recorded in Mumbai was 29.9 per cent on January 6. At the peak of the second wave, the highest number of single-day infections had stood at 11,163. Mumbai also witnessed double-digit fatalities on Wednesday after it fell below 10 on Tuesday. All the 10 deceased had comorbidities. While one was in the age group of 40-60 years and the rest were aged above 60.

Around 88 per cent of the new patients were asymptomatic and 108 people were hospitalised including 25 in oxygen beds. The recovery rate stood at 97 per cent as 1,838 patients were discharged. The doubling rate improved to 570 days. Maharashtra also saw a significant rise in new cases even as fatalities saw a drop on Wednesday. As per the report, 18,067 new cases and 79 deaths were reported across the state.

The state's case fatality rate was 1.84 per cent. A total of 36,281 patients were discharged during the day while the total number of active cases stood at 1,73,221 on Wednesday. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region registered 2,407 infections, a marginal rise. Thane Municipal Corporation and Navi Mumbai reported 184 and 315 cases, respectively - highest in MMR after Mumbai.

While Raigad saw 154 cases, Vasai-Virar had 59 cases and Thane had 106 cases. Other than Mumbai, the MMR saw a total of 16 fatalities. While Kalyan-Dombivli and Vasai-Virar saw five deaths each and Raigad reported two deaths. Mira-Bhayandar and Panvel saw one death each.

On Wednesday, 113 new Omicron cases were reported from across the state. Of this, 51 were from the MMR. Maharashtra has so far seen a total of 3,334 cases of the Omicron variant and 1,701 of the patients affected with the variant have been discharged.
