Covid-19: Mumbai sees rise in deaths again, records 27

A day after registering the lowest number of single-day Covid-19 deaths, the city saw a rise in fatalities as well as fresh cases on Wednesday. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) report, 788 new cases and 27 deaths were recorded across Mumbai.

After recording the lowest daily Covid-19 numbers in the second wave on June 3, Mumbai saw a rise in cases earlier last week but the numbers remained below the 1,000 mark. There was a marginal rise in the Test Positivity Rate (TPR) compared to Tuesday but it remained below 3 per cent. The TPR on Wednesday was 2.70 per cent. On June 6, for the first time, the TPR dropped below 3 per cent.

The city reported the highest number of cases - 11,163 - on April 4 and then the decline started. There has been a steady fall in the TPR since May 5, when it was 10.96 per cent. The doubling rate has continued to significantly improve and is now 553 days.

Of the 27 deaths reported in Mumbai, 15 patients had comorbidities, 14 deaths were of patients above 60 years of age and eight deaths were of those in the 40-60 group.

The city's recovery rate continues to be at 95 per cent and 511 people were discharged after full recovery on Wednesday.

Maharashtra saw a marginal rise in new cases on Wednesday. As per the state government's report, 10,989 fresh infections were reported across the state. However, it saw a marginal drop in Covid-19 fatalities as 261 deaths were reported on Wednesday.

Fatality rate increases

The state's case fatality rate has been seeing a steady rise and on Wednesday it was 1.74 per cent. A total of 16,379 patients were discharged after full recovery on Wednesday. Currently, the state has 1.61 lakh active cases.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) also reported a rise in new cases.

The MMR saw 2,403 cases on Wednesday, including the ones reported in Mumbai. Apart from Mumbai, Palghar saw 275 cases and Raigad 554. Thane reported 95 new cases while Kalyan-Dombivili saw 117 and Navi Mumbai 63.

The MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered 20 Covid-19 fatalities on Wednesday.

While Vasai-Virar reported five deaths, Raigad saw four. Palghar and Kalyan-Dombivili reported two deaths each and Panvel, Navi Mumbai and Ulhasnagar reported one death each.
