COVID-19: Mumbai cases jump past 1,000 again, fourth time in February

For the fourth time in February, the city registered over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday. With Amravati, Pune and Nagpur continuing to report a significant rise in new infections, the state's tally also remained on the higher side, and the number of deaths also increased slightly to 62, including five in Mumbai.

Mumbai had reported 1,167 cases on Wednesday, 1,145 on Thursday and 1,034 on Friday. It saw a drop below 1,000 on Saturday, but numbers jumped again a day later with 1,051 new cases.

The BMC has been conducting around 22,000 tests daily for the past few days, in an effort to trace the new infections as early as possible. On Sunday, 21,943 tests were conducted across the city and the test positivity rate (TPR) was 4.8 per cent. The TPR was less than the previous few days, but it was still higher than February first week's rate of below 3 per cent.

Of the five deceased patients in the city, all were aged above 60 and had comorbidities. Meanwhile, 827 patients recovered and were discharged in the city, which now has the recovery rate of 93 per cent. There are currently 9,715 active patients in the city.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) recorded 1,931 new cases, including Mumbai's 1,051. Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli also reported higher cases, with 211, 153, and 180, respectively.
Within the MMR, besides five new casualties in Mumbai, two deaths each were registered in Navi Mumbai and Mira-Bhayander and one in Ulhasnagar.

The state recorded 8,293 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, including 632 in Amravati, 790 in Pune circle, and 796 in Nagpur. Of the 62 deaths recorded in the state, 13 were from the Nashik circle, 12 each from the Akola and Nagpur circles and nine from the Pune circle.

Maharashtra's recovery rate has come down to 94 per cent. With the discharge of 3,753 more patients, the state now has 77,000 active cases that have more than doubled since the first week of February when it was below 30,000.
