COVID-19: Mumbai cases drop; Maharashtra sees sharp rise in deaths

State had recorded 15 deaths on Monday, but the number rose to 35 on Tuesday

Despite a higher number of COVID-19 tests conducted on a daily basis, the city continues to report a low number of fresh cases. Even the total number of deaths reported in the city on Tuesday was three. However, the state saw more than double the number of fresh deaths as reported on Monday.

The deaths both in the city and state had dropped marginally on Monday. The state had recorded 15 deaths, but on Tuesday the number rose to 35. A total of 14,470 tests were conducted in the city, out of which 375 turned positive.

On Monday, 399 positive cases were reported though a less number of tests were conducted (8,899). The test positivity rate on Tuesday was 2.6 per cent, lower than Monday's 4.5 per cent. Mumbai registered three deaths on Tuesday, which is the lowest since April last year, when the pandemic hit the city. All the three patients had co-morbidities and were above 60 years of age.

A total of 415 patients in the city recovered and were discharged on Tuesday. Mumbai has a total of 5,292 active patients, of which 1,524 are symptomatic and 297 are critical. The cases doubling rate of the city has reached 560 days.

The state reported a total of 2,515 fresh COVID cases, of which 693 were from the MMR, including Mumbai. All the other cities in MMR reported less than 100 patients each. Two deaths were reported in Navi Mumbai and the rest of the cities didn't see any deaths. The Pune circle registered 628 cases and Nagpur 396 cases. Out of the 35 deaths reported in the city, five were from MMR (three from Mumbai and two from Navi Mumbai), 14 from Pune Circle and six from Nagpur circle.

The cumulative number of cases in the state has reached 20.48 lakh and the recovery rate has stabilised at 95.7 per cent. Total of 2,554 patients have recovered in the state, which currently has 34,000 active cases, of which 12,000 are from the MMR.
