After witnessing a dip in the daily COVID-19 numbers for a day and recording about 27,000 cases, infections in the state shot up by almost 12,000 on Wednesday, with Maharashtra recording 39,544 cases. The city also witnessed an increase in the numbers and recorded more than 5,000 cases again. The total tally of the state has reached 28.12 lakh.
The number of deaths has also been on the rise since the last couple of days and Wednesday saw the highest number of fatalities in over five to six months at 227. The total number of deaths across the state has reached 54,649. On Wednesday, Mumbai reported 5,399 new cases. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) recorded 9,941 cases. The Thane Municipal Corporation area, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli Corporation area recorded 1,039, 619 and 913 cases respectively, in the MMR.
The state's recovery rate now stands at 85.34 per cent with 23,600 patients discharged on Wednesday. Maharashtra has a total of 35,62,43 active cases. Meanwhile, a total of 1.97 crore laboratory samples have been collected across the state till date since March last year. Out of these, 28.12 lakh have tested positive with a positivity rate of 14.21 per cent. Mumbai's recovery rate too has dropped and stands at 85 per cent while the doubling rate has dropped owing to increase in cases and now stands at 49 days. Whereas, the city's overall growth rate has increased over the past one week and currently stands at 1.37 per cent. The total number of positive cases recorded so far is 41.47 lakh while the number of tests carried out is 40.83 lakh. The active cases in the city now stand at 51,411.

The state's mortality rate is steady at around 1.94 per cent despite the increase in number of deaths. Till date there have been 54,649 COVID-related deaths across the state. The number of deaths due to other causes in the state is 1,361. According to the state government's data, there were 227 COVID-related deaths in the state on Wednesday, and the highest number of deaths was recorded in Nagpur city (31). MMR recorded a total of 33 deaths, including the 15 in Mumbai. Civic officials said out of the 15 deaths, 14 patients were suffering from other ailments and 12 were senior citizens.
