The controversial Development Plan for Mumbai drafted by the BMC has been scrapped by the state appointed cabinet, who have asked BMC to correct mistakes in the draft and prepare a new draft in next 4 months

The controversial draft development plan for Mumbai has been scrapped by the state government. On Tuesday, the state cabinet decided to ask BMC to correct mistakes in the draft and prepare a new draft in next 4 months.

The draft DP has come under fire, among other reasons, for its philosophy that more FSI implying more high-rises would create affordable housing in the city. File pic for representation

Following growing resentment against Mumbai's draft development plan (DP), Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that the plan would be scrapped and prepared afresh, if found irregular. Fadnavis had appointed a panel under chief secretary which submitted its report to the Cabinet on Tuesday.

On its recommendations, the cabinet scrapped the draft and will now direct BMC to prepare new draft which will again be opened up for suggestion and objections from the people.

The draft DP has been questioned over a proposal to grant more floor space index, opening of no development zones for constructions and the philosophy that more FSI would create more affordable housing in the city. Releasing the city's green spaces for development has also been criticized.
