A day after an 11-year-old boy died in a lift mishap in Malad, the police arrested a technician on the charge of negligence. They said the man, Vivekkumar Pandey, had not put any warning sign as he repaired the lift at Kaveri building of Ram Nagar in Chincholi Bunder. Pandey works for Bharat Electrical Company.
The police said the victim, Atharv Sharma, and his brother Kaushik, 21, had been to their grandparents' home but had to return on Monday for the boy's tuition classes. Kaushik told the police that they reached their society around 5.30 pm and he opened the first door of the lift on the first floor and Atharv tried to enter.
However, before the child could open the second gate, the lift started moving. Before anyone could react, Atharv had already got dragged and crushed between the wall of the shaft and the lift. Hearing Kaushik's screams, the watchman and neighbours rushed to the spot. Atharv was taken to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Based on Kaushik's complaint, the Malad police arrested Pandey for negligence under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code.
